Case Study: Scarborough Stingers — A Website Volunteer Coaches Can Actually Update

A youth baseball team needed a site for schedules, rosters, and news — and it had to be easy enough for volunteer coaches to maintain. Here's how we built it.

The 2011 Scarborough Stingers are a youth elite baseball team based in Scarborough, Ontario. They compete at a high level, with families tracking game schedules, tournament details, roster changes, and team news throughout the season.

They needed a website. But not just any website — one that volunteer coaches could update without calling a developer.

The Challenge

Community sports organizations have a unique set of requirements:

  • Frequent updates. Game schedules change. Tournaments get added. Rain-outs happen. The site needs to be updated regularly, sometimes on short notice.
  • Non-technical editors. The people updating the site are volunteer coaches and team managers, not web developers. If it requires code knowledge, it won’t get updated.
  • Mobile-first audience. Parents check the schedule on their phones at the field. If the site doesn’t work well on mobile, it doesn’t work at all.
  • Low budget, high expectations. Community organizations don’t have marketing budgets. The site needs to look professional and work reliably — without enterprise pricing.
  • Seasonal lifecycle. The site is heavily used during baseball season and needs to be easy to refresh each year with new rosters and schedules.

What We Built

The site is live at 2011scarboroughstingers.ca. Here’s what it includes:

Fast, modern tech stack

Built on Astro and deployed to Cloudflare Pages. The site loads in under a second on mobile. There’s no WordPress, no plugins to update, no security patches to worry about. It just works.

Custom CMS integration

This was the key requirement. We integrated a content management system that lets coaches:

  • Update game schedules and results
  • Edit roster information
  • Post team news and announcements
  • Upload photos from games and events

The CMS has a simple, visual interface. No code. No FTP. No asking someone to “push a deploy.” Coaches log in, make changes, and the site updates.

Mobile-first design

Every page is designed for phone screens first. Schedules are easy to scan on mobile. Contact info is one tap away. Photos load quickly even on cellular connections.

Team-appropriate structure

The site is organized around what families actually need:

  • Schedule — Upcoming games and tournaments with dates, times, and locations
  • Roster — Current team members
  • News — Team announcements, game recaps, and updates
  • About — Team history, coaching staff, and contact information

Nothing extra. No bloated navigation. Just the information people come looking for.

The Result

The site is live and actively used by the Stingers community. Parents check schedules. Coaches post updates. The site does its job without requiring ongoing developer involvement.

What makes this project significant

For us, the Stingers project demonstrates a few things:

  1. We build for real use cases, not just aesthetics. The site isn’t a portfolio showpiece — it’s a tool that a community uses every week.
  2. CMS integration matters. A website that only the developer can update is a website that stops being updated. The CMS makes the site sustainable.
  3. Modern tech isn’t just for big companies. A community baseball team gets the same fast, secure, reliable technology that enterprise clients pay thousands for. The tools are available — most agencies just don’t use them.
  4. The relationship continues. We maintain the site and help with seasonal updates. This is what ongoing partnership looks like — not a monthly invoice for nothing, but actual support when the team needs it.
